Electric Toilets, Yay or Nay?

Would like input from anyone with the new "electric toilets" that are being put into the newer coaches...do you like them or not? Jan McNeill

We have had no problems with our electric toilet. We have lived in our coach for well over 275 days and it has worked well the entire time. The only dislike is that the level of the water in the bowl could be a bit higher. That is probably an adjustment situation and we haven't found it that much of a problem to try and adjust it.
So we would say yay.

Seems to me that it is just one more gadget to break. I did not have a problem putting my foot on the pedal to flush and for the $$$ would just as soon have the old fashioned one. But, I have had the electric one for a week and it works just fine.

I have the Thetford elec. toilet in my 03 Allure and am not too impressed with it. First, it wouldn't hold water overnight. Buddy Gregg-Dallas put a kit in it that took care of that problem, but then it leaked clean water out the back. Four days and two parts shipments at Shorewood in Minneapolis took care of the problem. I guess it will be ok, but I had no problem using a pedal to flush, and the electric one is a whole lot noisier in the middle of the night when the bride is sleeping.

I had similar leak down issues on an elec head on a previous yacht I had. I used various lubricants on the rubber seal in the bottom of the bowl to keep it soft and prevent the leaking. I've used vasoline, WD40, Silicone spray, and even dumped some vegetable oil into the bowl on occasion. All seemed to help the situation. Nothing scientific though.

Keeping water in it helped the most. Leakage was worse after long periods of storage. Your new toilet may be suffering from lack of use from the time it was built to the time the coach was delivered and put into service.

I've probably owned tow or three dozen marine/RV heads of all types (vacumn flush, manual dump & fill, macerator type, & electric) and the most reliable head is still the fully manual one! On one vacumn flush head I had, I installed a DC pwr switch in the bathroom so I could shut off the head and prevent the vacumn pump from coming on in the middle of the night and waking us when it leaked down!

Never a problem with the manual.

I've owned both and had to work on both of them. The manual is much easier to work on (clean the rubber seal). The electric will not hold water eventually and is a bitch to fix. You need a kit to fix the leak unless it is just dirty. The kit includes a "bees wax" floor seal and a new flapper. Keep the flapper clean and wet. Use silicone lube on it and it will work for over a year without trouble. If I had a choice I'd take the old manual foot pedal type every time. jerry in NM, '00 Magna.
