Equalizing Batteries

A question for the knowledgeable...
The manual says remove all DC loads from the batteries when equalizing.
There are many "blind" connections to the 12VDC system that cannot be easily removed. Should I use the two main disconnects to do this? Does the charger still function if those are turned off?
Is there another way to protect the DC appliances from the over voltage used during this process?

Hi Dick,

For the short answer - the two main disconnects remove all dc loads but the separate fused lines to the Cummins ECM (3 7.5amp and 2 10 amp), the battery charger system is still connected but be sure to have the inverter off. The ECM has a clock (sec, etc to year date), if you remove power and reapply, the clock restarts but loses that time power was removed or you can power the ECM from a separate battery while you are equalizing. Please see foldout schematic S0669.

Thanks, Fred.... but I'm not sure I have the patients for wiring in a separate battery for maintaining the ECM clock. One would expect that the ECM would run off the chassis battery which SHOULD be isolated from the equalizing charge. What do you think?

Hi Dick,

I assumed you are using an external charger to equalize with. I also assumed you wanted to equalize each battery bank, yes the chassis battery is connected to the ECM. The safest approach is to disconnect the batteries at their terminals as I don't know the effect on the inverter/charger and the differential charger (heart echo charger)between the two banks. Another approach is to remove either wire at the 300A fuse to the inverter and pull the red wire at the heart echo charger. re: foldout S0669.09.
