Daytime Running Lights

Does anybody know if the 2003 Allure has DRLs? My insurance company asked because there is a discount if the rig had DRLs. I don't find any mention of it in the brochures. I will get about 5% discount for the alarm system.

Ree, my 2003 Allure does have daytime running lights. I'm curious what ins co you are using. I use progressive thru the Miller Agency in Oregon, and the subject of daytime running lights never came up. Maybe there's a discount out there I should be getting.

On the Allure 2002 #30690 the running lights come on if the windshield wipers have been activated once. Guess they figured that if it is rainy, turn the light on.

If I use the headlight switch for running the headlamps during the daytime, I forget to turn them off right away when I pull into a stop.

Would love to have a way to activate the headlamps WITH automatic turnoff WITHOUT having to smear the bugs across the windshield on a dry day.

Any wiring experts that could provided a push-button wiring mod that would turn on the headlamps until I turn off the ignition.

My 2002 Intrigue has daytime running lights. Ignition on=lights on. I thought it was standard throughout the transportation industry.

Are you SURE they don't come on?

When I was employed in safety, we ordered kits to add to vehicles that did not have DRL's. I wish I could remember the company who made them. Maybe a search on the internet would provide you with a source.

The kit is necessary to do the job. It provides an intermittent on off switching of the headlights. In effect, the headlights are operating at half power. Further, the kit provided a switch to turn off the DRL operation when the emergency or parking brake is used.
This feature is required by law in certain states. This kit is a small electronic box with only wires to be connected. All of the switches are electronic and function quite well. I do not know of one failure in the hundreds of these units we purchased. DRL's are a great safety device. The purpose of DRL's is to get you noticed by the other driver. Operating headlights get you noticed. If the other driver sees you, your chances of being in an accident are greatly reduced. We reduced our vehicle accidents by over 50% when DRL's were used.

There are several mechanizations to choose from, here are the extremes:

The one car manufacturers use for the most part does three things: puts the headlights in series which reduces brillance and prolongs bulb life, provides for an overide when the headlight switch is used and provides an indication that DRL is in use - this all requires major wiring changes.

A simple version might may as follows: The DRL function goes on with ignition on via an added switch (marked DRL)and LED to provide an indication. The switched 12vdc passes through two diodes for some voltage reduction and connected to the headlight switch's output side. The cost is about $25 and can be done at the headlight switch location utilizing the cup holder backplate for the added switch and LED, the diodes and wiring fit neatly inside the left side console. For details, please email me directly. This approach provides for all the functions mentioned above.

My insurance is written through RV Alliance. When I called to see about a discount because of the alarm system, I asked if there was anything else that qualified. The lady mentioned air bags and DRL. But, I cannot find the lights mentioned anywhere in the documentation--and I have to send something as "proof" that it has them. Won't cost anything to call and ask about a discount.

My 2002 Allure #30773 has daytime running lights that turn on the minute you turn the ignition to the on position. I was having a problem with my Smart wheel that was causing me some issues with my lights. You might want to check on that. C/C has resolved all of them now.

On my Allure 2002 I need to operate the windshield wipers once (from my Smart Wheel) to turn on the DRL's!!!!! Needless to say, it is on the list of service items when I take it in for my final warranty service. Hate smearing the bugs across the dry window. :-)

Are you sure you actually have a DRL module? Turning on the wipers and the headlights turning on is the correct operation of the Smartwheel, if there is not a DRL module. If there is a DRL module, the headlights should be on whenever ignition is on.

I thought that was std in the Allure 2002 with smart wheel. CC said that was wrong and they would fix it. Turning on head lamps after running through a sprinkler, but not DRL's that come on when the engine is running

?? Maybe more than one smartwheel is miswired!

I will be dropping off coach on May 5th and picking it back up May 15th. Still working full time, so didn't want to stick around on the out chance it would be more than a week. They have some paint work to do too (minor crack in side wall, and blistering roof vent). Plus hopefully replace my Invertrix with a different brand inverter. Also slide hoses might take three days to repair a minor leak over propane tank, if they happen to be "HTH02" hoses.... Warranty was up 12/20/02, so I had my list to them at that time for later work (after the snows). Heading up from Roseville, CA.

Does anyone know of the wiring change or component addition required to cause the headlights to turn on when the engine is started?

Currently, my headlights only automatically turn on when I turn on my windshield wipers using the smart wheel. I must run then through one quick on/off cycle and smear the bugs across the dry windshield to activate Daytime Running Lights. This is exactly as the manual says is proper, and the factory refuses to make any wiring changes to activate the lights on engine start! Must have been some law in some state that in 2001 (when the 2002 coach was built) that required Daytime Running Lights only when it starts to rain.

Coach is in Junction City now through Wednesday.

Herb,

I would like to know if your DRL's go out when you operate the parking brakes. If they do not, they should. This is for a safety reason that I won't talk about now. However, if they do, the DRL's should be connected to the wiper circuit through a controling device. It should be a simple task to locate the wire that is connect to the wiper circuit and connect it to the ignition circuit or to the gear shift selector that would activate the DRL's when you select a forward gear.

My DRL's come on with the ignition switch and Park or other gear select has no effect on the lights. There on all the time. CC says this is the way there suppose to work.

Tom,

Gear selection should have no effect on the DRL's. However, when you pull the yellow knob and dump the air for the parking brakes, the DRL's should go off. If you have a GM vehicle with DRL's this will happen. It is for a safety reason and Maine State law that it works this way.

I don't know what the various state laws (or federal) are re DRL but my 2002 Intrigue came off the line in September, 2001 with DRL that come on when the ignition is turned on.
I don't know about the safety requirement of extinguishing the DRL when the parking break is applied. If that were the case then one would think that the lights would NOT come on with the ignition switch when starting up when the parking brakes are on.
