Speedometer hookup

On our recent trip to the east coast for four months we had the problem of the speedometer and odometer not working for half of one day. Do not know what caused it but would like to know so that next time I can stop it. Any ideas from the electrical garus who have had to time and inclination to peruse the schematics????
