air dryer servicing

My 1999 Intrigue calls for the air dryer desiccant cartridge replacement at 50000 miles which I now have. My manual also says to have it done by a sevice technician. Has anybody replaced their cartridge and can they provide a step-by-step procedure including tips and cautions. Is it way under the coach and hard to get at and is that why CC says to take it to a service facility? My manual also says to purge the valves periodically and watch for moisture which is an indication that the cartridge needs to be replaced. I never have noticeable moisture so do I really need to replace it?

George,

This spring I looked at changing my air dryer desiccant cartridge.
The unit on my coach was right below the floor. Since all the air must be released from the air lines I didn't see a way to do it.
I took it to a shop who raised the coach off the ground 5'. The tech still had trouble reaching & working on the unit. The change took him almost 3 hours. They also changed the purge valve and the discharge heater. Parts cost $135 & labor was $204. I was glad I let them do it.

As to weather it needed it or not---I try to follow the recommenations to avoid problems. If you wait until the filter is bad you may have more problems than just a filter change.

Hope this helps.........Steve Intrigue #10673

I recently had mine done too. It had been 25K miles and the service tech couldn't get the desicant cartridge out of the housing. We ended up buying an entire new housing ($400) and sending the old one back (with the old desicant cartridge still inside) for a $100 core refund. If the cartridge gets rusted up, the entire house can get destoyed. The cartridge change is cheap!
