Low Profile Tires

As a new member,I am hoping to share some problems and concerns with fellow members.

We own a 2000 Intrigue, 40' with single galley slide. The coach is equipped with Toyo "low profile" (275/70rx 22.5) tires. We have 2 concerns/problems:
1) In the past 14 months we have experienced 3 separate tire blowouts. All 3 were after we had a 4 point weigh and carry 120 psi.
The DOT plate in the coach calls for 125 psi. Country Coach techs have told us that we should use the pressue stated in the Toyo charts after the coach was weighed. After it was weighed the chart called for 115psi, but we have used 120 psi to be on the "safe side" and I very carefully check pressue before each trip.

2) The coach has very poor road clearance and we seem to be scraping
the ground with the frame and /or generator exhaust pipe on uneven terrain.

Has any other owner(s) experienced similar problems??? Any suggestions to remedy my problems would be appreciated.

I have had no tire problems.

The clearance problem sounds like maybe you have a ride height problem. Have you checked it? I have never scraped either the rear of the coach or the genset exhaust. When I purchased the coach the rear sagged lower than I thought was proper. The rear ride height was set too low. Pretty easy to correct.

Hi Bill & Cathy,

Welcome. Sorry to hear you are having problems with tires.
It sounds like you may be second owners of your coach. If this is the case, have you been receiving any information concerning tires from CC. If not you need to call their tech. support and request any information concerning recalls on your coach. They will be able to tell you anything that relates to the basic coach.
If you have any concerns with the engine, these are best addressed direct to Cummins.
It would be a great help if you would include your coach number when writing notes on this forum, not just the year of manufacture. It appears CC makes running changes during the model year, not just once per year when new models are introduced.

I hope you get additional responses to your note that will help.

On the Magna, both front tires were worn out before the recall reached me and I bought two new ones. They later sent me two new tires which I installed and used the others as spares.
The Intrigue recall was supposedly because CC had delivered the tires under inflated. The Magna recall was mandated by the Feds because the tires were not the correct load rating. I don't know if this is part of your problem but I would contact CC and find out if the recall has been completed on you coach. jerry in NM.

Could you simply explain to this dummy how it is easy to change/adjust the ride heights? I have a 2000 Allure. Thanks.

Seems to me that rvmike was referring to himself as the dummy and he is clearly aware of his his own mental prowess in this area. rheavn indicated that the ride height was "pretty easy to correct" but did not say how. Myself, being another dummy, would be most interested in the procedure to do this, especially following the recent series of posts regarding ride height problems that have appeared on this board recently.
If rheavn would be so gracious as to enlighten the likes of rvmike and I, I, for one, would be most grateful.

There are air valves located on the frame, two, just above the rear wheels and I believe just one in the front-center of the coach. Each valve has a 12" to 16" rod attached to the valve and then linked to another rod which is attached to the body of the coach. Where the two rods connect you can raise or lower the connection point which in turn lowers or raises the ride height of the coach. While the adjustment of the connection point is not necessarily THAT DIFFICULT, you need to know the measurements required for a proper ride --- proper clearances, etc. I do not know those measurements. You should call CC service to get the correct distances. You should raise and block the coach as high as possible to make access better. Also, it is not that easy to get to these fittings----reaching around the tires, and crawling under the front (on my Affinity - just to the rear of the front tires) of the coach to make the adjustments.
If you are not real comfortable working under the coach, I recommend you take it your dealer and have them make the adjustments. It shouldn't take that long or cost much to get the job done.

An apology is in order! After re-reading the original message I determined that you were calling yourself the dummy. I just couldn't understand a Country Coach member that judgemental of another CC member. This forum is so good for all of us "dummies" to get information and help with our units. We are fortunate to have so many that have the knowledge to help us with things that we don't know how to fix.

Hi, I'm the dummy(just kidding)

It really is a fairly simple procedure. My owners manual is fairly clear in describing same. The ride height in my coach measured between the axle center to frame rail is 7.5" rear & 5.5" front. In my shop my coach sits on 1 1/2" boards which provides a little more clearance. I perform the adjustment with the engine running so there is a constant air supply. On the rear there is a rod on each side that runs skyward from the rear end mounts. The rod on each side is fastened to a perpendicular rod which is attached to the air control valves. They attach with a rubber slider that is held in place by a small hose clamp. Loosen the hose clamp & you can slide the rubber slider up & down. By moving the slider up you will put more air in the corresponding air bag-raising the ride height. Lower it & the reverse happens. The manual says always lower below ride height & work up to correct height. I worked both rears slowly until both sides had the correct height. I did this while lying under the coach with no problem--with no air in air bags I had plenty of movement room. The front is done the same, but there is only one air valve & rod set.

The second way is take it to a dealer & enjoy the mocha.

Thanks for the succinct procedure notes (not bad for a dummy, eh?) - that's what we refer to as necessary and sufficient. Even though I'm just a self-educated dummy, I would rather know what has been done than let some of the "professional" knuckle-draggers screw it up and then empty my billfold.

Adjusting the ride heighth is rather easy, if one has the coach on a smooth concrete floor and has a comfortable dolly with which to scoot under the coach to the inside of the frame just in front of the rear wheels. On can see the two rod sticking up, one on each side of the inside of the frame, and easily see where they connect to the other rod with a lock connector. unlocking the connector and raising it up and down the extendor rod changes the coach height up and down- all the way to the end of the rod is as high as it will go. I recommend you have it done in a qualified and knowledgable alignment shop. I would not do it myself, althoug I have watched it being done to my coach. One other note - the ride height should be rechecked anytime there is an adjustment to the alignment of the vehicle. ron Intrigue # 11262 san diego

-Dick, you missed the models that had the clearance problem----'99 and early 00"s. I had the latter and it was really close to the ground, much closer than the '97 I had previously--in fact, shortly after I bought my 2,000 CC went to the 12/22.5 tires and increased road clearance dramatically.

Apology accepted! I just returned from a 3 week trip to Nova Scotia and am still enjoying a high so nothing can upset me just yet...We had a good trip and this time there were no frozen starters and no phone calls to road service, CC, or B. Gregg! The Allure worked smoothly and is much warmer and better insulated than my prior Bounder. We had a few nights with temps at or below freezing but we stayed pretty comfy using our down comforter. Alas, just yesterday the entry step started acting with a mind of its own! A nights rest, some cuss words, and some oil had it working okay today...
Enjoyed learning that many others are in contact with Doug Beaudry and the tech service team at CC. In fact, I would nominate Doug for President! Forgetting party affiliation for a moment what politician would ever be so helpful?

RVMike. Our experience is that the steps need to be lubricated every thirty days or they definately tend to develope a "mind of their own." We were instructed to clean off the old grease and add new white lithium grease as I said , every thirty days. Hi Denny. I love Nova Scotia and have been going there since the early 60's when I first visited on a bicycle (my younger more physical days). There has never been an area that I did not enjoy (barring too many travellers). The people are friendly. Cape Breton is beautiful and the drive on the Cabot trail is somewhat similar to Rt 1 in CA. For the past 5 years we have been mostly staying on our lakeside property on the NW Acadian coast (French). We had the property bulldozed 5 years ago and electricity added 2 years ago. Also added a small shed for storage. Doubt if this info helps you much but mostly I would suggest trying to go out of season as I hate crowds. Halifax is a beautiful city and then there is Peggy's Cove not too far from Halifax. Nova Scotia tourism provides plenty of info and maps and I would suggest contacting them. By all means go and enjoy the area. The value of the US$ does not hurt either!

Re your trip to Nova Scotia. The town of Lunenburg on the Atlantic Coast, south of Halifax can be the highlight of your trip if your interestes are in marine activities. It is the home of the Bluenose Schooners of days of yore . The museum there is excellent and has demo's in how to on launching a boat, scallop fishing and cleaning. If you're good you may talk yourself into a personalized tour of the old foundry that is still in operation that built all of the engines for the schooners. Digby is the Scollop Center of the universe and its scollop festival was in August, after the Lobster festival in Maine. We took a ferry from St Johns, to Digby which was very interesting. We also suggest a ferry to PEI and then the bridge back. Some may find PEI more interesting than Nova Soctia, I did. We did the ferry's with our 36' and towed car with no problems at all. Hard to see anything of Peggy's Cove in the RV. Absolutely no parking at all for an RV and they mean it. Street performers in Halifax were a hoot. On your way up you may want to see the Reversing Falls in St Johns, New Brunswick. Especially worth seeing from down below by the power plant or up above at the restaurant decking.
