Cummins ISL370--White smoke

I am experiencing loss of power and white smoke when accelarating from a stop. It is intermittent and the engine quickly recovers.
Kevin Kiscouan at CC says they have had reports of this due to fuel problems. I anm always careful to only buy fuel at truck stops with high turnover.

My coach is now at a local truck shop that does warranty work for Cummins and I will pass along what they find. In the meantime I thought I'd ask if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, what was the solution? I'll appreciate some input.

Yes, we have the 370 ISL engine. At the time my wife was driving and we were in town when we lost power and the white smoke appeared from the exhaust. This went on several times and we pulled over for a exterior inspection. Finding nothing wrong outside, I checked inside and found the exaust brake on. Turned it off and that was the end of the problem. The white smoke is the unburned fuel as the engine works as a compressor to slow the coach. When you go to a FMCA rally talk to the Cummings people ab out how the exhaust brake works.

Larry, I hope you've hit on the problem. I had previously had a similar problem with a Pac brake hanging up on a previous coach, but that caused black smoke to roll out. The white smoke is what threw me. I leave the jake on all the time unless in rolling country where it interferes with the cruise control. If the Cummins people don't come up with anything different, I'll start turning off the jake in town. Thanks.

Well, I just came from talking to the mechanic working on my coach. I related your experience to him and he said his experience with exhaust brakes hanging up has always been black smoke. White smoke, according to him, is associated with water or other fuel problems. He currently believes my problem is associated with the other problem I took it in for, namely, the engine running too cool. He is having a problem getting in touch with people in Junction City who he has asked for a schematic of the hydr fan. It seems to me that CC is costing themselves alot of money on warranty charges due to the inordinate time it takes to get answers plus causing us owners alot of down time.I'll continue to keep posting progress.

I ran into the white smoke problem on a few coachs back in the midwest. Working with Cummins Northwest we found it to be a fuel issue, the "c-tane" level of fuel commonly sold in the midwest was rated at 45, Cummins recommends a minimum c-tane of 50 on the ISL.
In all cases we added a "c-tane" boost additive, 1 quart for every 100 gallons which seemed to solve the problem. For some reason in Minnesota the Amoco stations were the only one I found selling 50 c- tane diesel fuel. This c-tane boost also worked well on the ISC Cummins.

I would try calling CCI myself. We never wait more then 3 hours for a call back. I always hear about call back problems but never had that experience, but I normally do the calling myself and do not let it up to a repair shop.
Any plans you need of the hydo fans should be in your book.

I have the ISL 370 engine with the Jake. I have not experienced the loss of power or white smoke..... but I have noticed a power loss at speed but attribute it to over/under running temps. I'm working with CC on a possible fan controller problem. (and have been for six weeks now!)

I seldom turn off my Jake and rely on it for stopping power. And I have not seen smoke black or white. Is it possible that there is something else at work to cause the smoke?

I have been troubleshooting my fan controller at the direction of CC tech support. The owners manual had schematics but none of the voltages/resistances needed to do the testing.

Dick, it's not the Jake----everyone seems to think it's fuel related. I guess I'll have to see if it runs out, or else put an additive in the tank.

We have also just begun having white smoke with our ISL. It first started in town, when pulling away from a light. We only noticed it twice on the way to our CG. I don't use the jake brake except on hills, so I knew it was not related. On the way home, I noticed that with the tranny in regular mode it seemed to stay in 1st and that's when the white smoke would occur. If I feathered the accelerator to keep it in first it would keep smoking, however if I added gas, it would stop. The next town, I put it in economy mode to make it shift faster and the problem virtually went away. Once on the freeway of course, no problem, and I did not notice any sluggishness or loss of power, and I was watching very closely. when we got home, I purposely went slow through the neighborhood, to see if I could make it smoke, and it wouldn't so I am stumped. I stopped and bought more diesel thinking maybe it was a bad batch, ie water in or low cetane. But on the way out of the station, yep, white smoke again. So, I don't know. The diagnostics don't say any faults, so I am stumped. Any ideas?

I have always heard that a cold engine... which doesn't burn fuel very efficiently... is one of the major causes of white smoke. This would help explain some of it.
