We had a '98 Dutch Star and then moved up to a '00 Mountainaire and now have a'02 CC Magna. We can understand your dilema but you only get what you pay for. Newmar is a great company but they insist on keeping their prices with in certain ranges and are slow to adopt recent inovations in the industry. Just a few items to look for in the DSDP: the turning radius (if a Frightliner chasis ok but if a Spartan chasis it may only have a 45 deg. turning radius), the mechanical lock in for the slides can be very difficult to reach (esp. in the triple slide- the bedroom slide and the passenger's side living room slide), the condensation from the a/cs runs off the roof rather than down an internal tube (in addition to making it harded to keep your unit clean , this has created a problem with the passenger side awning which has been installed above the gutter), air leveling is not available, the tires are relatively small, etc.
Our CC has a tag axel and, having now driven it for almost a year, we would not have another coach without a tag axel. With the very good front end turning radius and the tag axel lifted the unit is extremely easy to manuever for a forty footer. The added stability on the highway, and the additional carrying capacity, of the tag axel is a real plus.
